About
A calculator that assumes you have never done this before
Most shiplap calculators were written for people who already know what a course is. This one was written for the person standing in a hallway with a tape measure and a phone.
WallBoardCalc started with a small annoyance: every shiplap calculator online wanted six inputs before it would tell you anything, then repeated the word “wastage factor” as if everyone already had one. Measuring a wall is easy. Knowing what to buy afterwards is where the weekend disappears.
So this one works the other way round. You enter the wall, you see the wall. Rows appear as you type, the last row goes red the moment it needs ripping, and the shopping list rewrites itself with the exact pack count. There is no calculate button because there is nothing to submit — the maths runs in your browser on every keystroke.
What we are honest about
- Board widths are nominal coverage widths. Real boards vary slightly by mill, and prefinished boards can differ by up to 1/16 in.
- Openings are deducted by area, not by position. That is accurate for buying material and useless for planning where to nail.
- Waste is a judgement call, not a measurement. 10% suits most flat walls; anything with outlets, corners or angles deserves 15%.
- Prices are starting points. Shelves change weekly and postcode changes everything, so every price on the page is editable.
How the site is paid for
The shopping list includes affiliate links to retailers. If you buy through one, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We do not accept payment for placement, we do not recommend a board style, and the calculated quantities are identical whether you click a link or not.
